Granulation Tissue

상처가 아물어가는 과정에서 볼 수 있는 유연하고 과립상(顆粒狀)인 선홍색의 조직.

The term granulation tissue is derived from the appearance of small, red, granular foci which bleed easily, commonly seen within freshly healing tissue. These can be readily demonstrated in the base of skin wounds when the overlying scab is picked off. The granulations consist of clusters of fragile newly-formed capillary blood vessels which proliferate and grow into damaged tissue along with fibroblasts at an early stage of the repair process.

The following images illustrate the macroscopic and histological features of granulation tissue.

1. Granulation tissue - Macroscopic.

This illustration is of a recently, severely burnt, hand. Much of the skin has been completely destroyed and the underlying tissue is undergoing repair. The damaged area is being replaced by vascular granulation tissue, recognizable by its intense red colour, which will eventually undergo further organisation to form dense fibrous scar.

2. Granulation tissue - Microscopic.

This photomicrograph shows several thin-walled capillary blood vessels growing into damaged tissue associated with a perforation of the large intestine. Red blood cells can be seen within the vessels and also extravasated in the tissue. The elongated cells with plump, oval nuclei and rather indistinct pink cytoplasm in between the capillary vessels are fibroblasts.

3. Granulation tissue - Microscopic.

Similar microscopic field to the previous image. Recognize the same structures and cell types in this illustration.

4. Granulation tissue - Microscopic.

This area of granulation tissue contains a population of chronic inflammatory cells in addition to the vascular and fibroblastic elements, illustrating that inflammation and healing are very commonly concurrent. You should be able to recognize at least two types of inflammatory cells here, even at this relatively low power

조직학적으로는 모세혈관이 풍부한 새로운 결합조직이다. 괴사조직(壞死組織)을 분리 제거하거나 상처로 인한 결손부를 메우거나 이물질을 배제하는 목적을 가지며, 그 기본적 성분은 섬유아세포(纖維芽細胞)인데 목적 달성에 필요한 많은 모세혈관과 여러 유주세포도 포함되어 있다. 이 육아조직은 마침내 반흔이 되어 상처가 낫는다. 만성 염증인 경우에는 육아조직이 결절(結節)을 이루어 육아종(肉芽腫)이 되는 일도 있다.
